About a week after the death of Robert Pitt, an entry in the Ferryland Diary of Robert Carter states: "Jan 28 1843 - James Johnson of Caplin Bay has this winter opened up the forge of Mr. Holdsworth for carrying on business on his own account"

James Johnston is listed in the voters lists at Caplin Bay (Beach) in 1840 and 1842, and at Ferryland (North Side) from 1844 to 1859. James was granted land on the north west side of the main road at Ferryland in 1847. (Registry Crown Lands - index #658). In the Church of England baptism records, James occupation is given as blacksmith.

No headstone has been found for James. I think it is likely that he was buried in the Anglican cemetery at (Forge Hill) Ferryland, which was close to his forge. It is not known if a headstone ever existed. This cemetery has a number of old headstones, one dates back to 1818. If one did exist, it is possible that it is now buried in the hillside, overgrown with grass and brush (Kevin Reddigan).

Although it is likely that all of James sons learned the blacksmithing trade, it appears that the eldest son, William, inherited the Ferryland blacksmith business from his father. In a small rural area, there would not have been sufficient business to support other forges, so William's brothers moved on to other areas and trades.

William was the only child of James and Eliza who stayed at Ferryland. He operated the forge at Ferryland, and later on, some of his sons worked with him in the family business. It was his fourth son, Charlie, who mainly carried on the family business, with the assistance of his brother, Nick. The Newfoundland 1921 Census shows that William, Kate, son Gordon and son Charlie, who had married, were living together in the family home at Ferryland.

William was baptised in the Church of England and is noted as Protestant in his marriage record in the Roman Catholic church. However, according to headstone information, he is buried in the RC Cemetery at Ferryland. It is not known if he actually converted to Roman Catholicism before his death.

When Alfred left Ferryland it looks like he travelled much farther than his siblings, most of whom settled in St. John's. It appears that he ended up in Portland, Maine where he worked as a blacksmith. By 1915, Alfred was established in the smithy business in partnership with Joseph J. Smith. He had at least two daugthers, who were still living at home.

Charles Johnston (of James) is listed as a drayman, living at Circular Rd. when he was married. This is likely the Charles that was listed as working at the brewery.

OBITUARY: BEATRICE E. JOHNSTON There passed peacefully on Saturday at 2.30 a.m. an estimable young lady in the person of Miss Beatrice JOHNSON. She had been ailing for the past 18 months from internal trouble, resulting from an attack of flu, from which there was no hope of recovery. Deceased was of a kind and cheerful disposition and well liked by all who knew her. She was a teacher at St. Thomas’s Sunday School until forced by ill health to abandon her post. She was also a devout member of that congregation. She leaves to mourn a father and mother, two brothers, and two sisters and a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 from her late residence 8 Hunt’s Lane.

On May 26th, 1915, the SS Morwenna, on a voyage from Cardiff, Wales to Sydney, Nova Scotia in ballast, was sunk by the German submarine U-41 (Claus Hansen), 72 miles SxE of Fastnet. The crew were landed yesterday morning by the Belgian steam trawler O.130 Jacqueline. One man was killed and three wounded. Jack Johnston was one of the survivors.

Leaving her sister Florence Una Penney (husband Bill) and family; Special niece Cynthia Brown; two sisters-in-law Mary Vavasour and family, Edith Vavasour and family; also a number of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and friends. The Evening Telegram - St. John's - June 20, 2001. VAVASOUR, Charles Victor - 84, of Tideways, Wolfville passed away June 17, 2001 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Ernest and Blanch (Dingle) Vavasour. He was a member of the Church Lads Brigade before enlisting in 1940 with the 166 Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery to serve overseas in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 St. John's, Nfld.; the Travelers Association, Nfld.; and the Avalon Masonic Lodge, St. John's, Nfld. The Anchorman Chorus and the Singing Legionnaires, of St. John's, Nfld.; The Barbershop Chorus and The Dukes of Kent, Kentville. He is survived by his loving wife Doris Harvey (Dawe); sons: James, Carbonear, Nfld., Gerald, Windsor, NS; grandson James Charles, Texas; special niece Susan Jane, Waverley; and many more nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by sisters Ruth Johnston and Betty Oakley. Cremation has taken place. A private committal and a Royal Canadian Legion Service will be held in the St. John Anglican Cemetery, Wolfville at a later date. Memorial Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS. Longtime owner and proprietor of Pine Bud Nurseries in St. John's and Mount Pearl, and longtime member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #245. Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Doris and brother Basil. Left to mourn his wife of 40 years Monika (nee Voss), son Karl Douglas Jr. (wife Jennifer) of Nova Scotia, daughter Tina Lynette (husband Dwayne) Dunphy and his beloved grandson Nathan, the joy of his life.
