  1. 1.  John Glascott was born Abt 1760, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland; died 13 Apr 1817, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland; was buried Abt 15 Apr 1817, Whitechurch Parish, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

    Other Events:

    • Family History: 1560 -1819, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland

    Notes:

    Birth:
Piltown is often spelt as Pilltown in other early documents.

    Family History:
The Glascotts originated in Aldersgate, London. William Glascott landed in Youghal Co.Cork in 1650 with a troop of horse to fight for Cromwell. By way of payment he received lands in Ballykelly in the Parish of Whitechurch-taken from Arthur Keating,- and at Oldcourt and Ballyfarnogue or Aldertown. The Oldcourt lands were taken from David Sutton.

William was succeeded by his son John Glascott who added the lands of Knockea and Killesk to the estate. Alderton was next taken over by John's son George Glascott who married Anne Gifford the daughter of William Gifford of Piltown in 1729. The Glascotts and the Giffords were to own most of Sutton's Parish in time. Under the marriage agreement,George took over the lands of Piltown,Whitechurch and Ballykelly. Before George died he divided his estate between his sons Francis and John. Francis received Piltown and Whitechurch while John took over Alderton or Ballyfarnogue.

When Francis Glascott died in 1798 his son Rev.William Glascott succeeded him at Piltown. He was the Rector of the Parishes of Killesk and St.James, Dunbrody. John Glascott, who came to Newfoundland and married Susannah Tree, was the brother of the Rev. William Glascott. Most of their family holdings were in and around the port town of New Ross,Co. Wexford. The references to John Glascott usually identify him as "Glascott of Creacon", an estate that appears to be at Creaken Lower near New Ross, Co. Wexford. There is no indication of the total size of John's holdings.

Nothing is documented as to why John Glascott came to Newfoundland in the first place. He doesn't appear to have been in the military or involved in trade as a merchant, agent, etc. However, we know that he was here for at least a few years since he married Susannah Tree of Ferryland abtout 1789 and they had one child, Sarah, born here about 1790. After this daughter was born, he returned to Ireland with his family and it appears that all subsequent children were born in Co. Wexford.

From surviving records, we have learned that John Glascott and Susannah Tree had seven children (six surviving) before they both died, John in 1817 and Susannah, a year later, in 1818. Most of their children, were either young adults or teenagers, and since they were surrounded with close relatives, survival and support should not have been an issue.

It's hard to verify exactly what happened after their parent's died. However, we learn from the an obit/in memoriam for William Glascott placed in a Perth, Ontario newspaper in 1875, the darker side of family greed soon came to the surface. According to the article, William and his siblings were stripped of any inheritance by their uncle, the Rev. William Glascott.

I have found records which indicates that, in 1819, John and William were sent to North America, arriving at Quebec City after a passage of 35 days out of Waterford, Ireland. Within a few days, they journeyed onward from Quebec City to Montreal and eventually made their way to Ontario (Canada West).

Family lore states that their sisters, Lucinda and Anne, were purportedly sent off about the same time but I couldn't find any records for them on the same ship that carried John and William to Quebec. Burke's Landed Gentry states that they went to Canada in 1822 but I don't know if that information is factual. Their sibling, Francis, if still living, was likely still in the Royal Navy and their eldest daughter, Sarah, had been married for several years and was likely living in Co. Dublin.

If things unfolded as stated, it's hard to imagine that a "man of the cloth" could be so greedy and selfish as to treat his own nieces and nephews in such a crass manner.

John married Susannah Tree Abt 1789, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Susannah (daughter of Francis Tree and Bridget Murphy) was born 20 Jan 1765, Boston, Massachusetts, British North America; died 13 Jun 1818, Co. Wexford, Ireland; was buried Abt 15 Jun 1818, Whitechurch Parish, Co. Wexford, Ireland. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Sarah Glascott Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born Abt 1790, Ferryland, Newfoundland; died Abt 8 May 1870, West Derby District, Lancashire, England; was buried 10 May 1870, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

    Other Events:

    • Baptism: 28 Feb 1790, St. John's, Newfoundland

    Notes:

    Birth:
No birth record was located for Sarah, but it is quite possible she was born at Ferryland, Newfoundland, the home settlement of her mother, Susannah.

In the 1851 England Census, Sarah's age was recorded as 61 and her place of birth is quite clearly shown as Newfoundland. However in the 1861 England Census, her place of birth was "dittoed" as Kingstown, Ireland, the place of birth noted after her husband's name. It appears that this was the Kingstown, Co. Dublin that was renamed DĂșn Laoghaire about 1920.

    Baptism:
Sarah's family surname appears to be have been interpreted as Glascol in her baptism entry transcribed into the Dept. of Public Health and Welfare (DPHW) registers. These records were transcribed from the original registers in the 1940s. There is a possibility that name in the original could have been spelt Glascot, but the DPHW transcriber could not see, or failed to notice the cross of the letter t. Of course, Glascot was a variation of the surname Glascott sometime used along with several other variant spellings.

There were three other Ferryland children baptised on the same day as Sarah. This could indicate that these baptisms were performed at Ferryland by a visiting clergyman or the families traveled together to St. John's to have their children baptised. As opposed to the requirement of timely baptisms under the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican baptisms were often left for long intervals after births, even years in some cases. Therefore I am inclined to believe the former scenario since the end of February was a less than ideal time of the year for sea travel with women and children.

    Buried:
Gravesite Details Age: 80 years. "Death date" is burial date.

Sarah married Thomas Hasler 14 Sep 1814, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Thomas was born Abt 1793, Knockmullen, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died Abt 4 Mar 1874, West Derby District, Lancashire, England; was buried Abt 6 Mar 1874, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. [Group Sheet]

    Other Events:

    • Baptism: 9 Dec 1794, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland

    Notes:

    Birth:
The name of this area appears to have two spellings, Creacon and Creaken. The first one may pertain to the the spelling that the Glascott family used for their estate but the official government address refers to the area as Lower Creaken, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

  3. 4.  Lucinda "Lucy" Glascott Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born 1 Jan 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died 21 Aug 1845, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America; was buried 22 Aug 1845, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Some reference state that Lucy was born 1 Jan 1799.

    Buried:
Pioneer Cemetery, aka Old Burying Ground (Craig St. Cemetery) Anglican Section of the cemetery.

I found a picture of a headstone in this cemetery for Lucy but it is very hard to read. However it indicates that Lucy died on the 21 Aug 1848. Her age appears to be 49 yrs.If correct, the birth date (1795)given in Burke's Landed Gentry is off by several years.

    Died:
    See burial notes.

Lucinda married Jean Baptiste Publow Abt 1822. Jean was born 1795, Kortrijk, Flanders, Belgium; died Abt 1840. [Group Sheet]

  4. 5.  Francis Glascott Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born Abt Nov 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland; died Yes, date unknown.

    Other Events:

    • Baptism: 5 Nov 1795, Creaken, Co. Wexford, Ireland
    • Military: Abt 1810, Ireland

    Notes:

    Baptism:
While it would make sense that there would be a "Francis" in this family, since both of his grandfathers was so named, I couldn't find any documented reference to prove that he actually existed.

    Military:
Burke's "Landed Gentry" states Francis had military service. It says he died, unmarried, having been a midshipman in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars. He supposedly joined or was impressed into the Royal Navy about 1810.

I searched the military records in the UK National Archives but couldn't find a service record that matches a Francis Glascott.

    Notes:

    Birth:
In the 1861 Census of Canada, Ann, 61 years old, was shown as a widow living in the same household as her son, John, and his family.

    Census:
In the 1861 Canada Census, Anne, a widow was living with her son, John, his wife and two children in the town of Perth, Lanark, Canada West.

    Died:
Several ancestry family trees suggest Anne died in 1867. I could not verify this year but it appears she had died before the 1871 Canada Census was taken.

Anne married Jean Vanexheim Abt 1822, Ontario, British North America. Jean was born Abt 1788, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium; died Bef 1851. [Group Sheet]

    Died:
When William Glascott died, even though he was living in the United States, the Perth Courier [Ontario, Canada] of April 30, 1875 carried this "In Memoriam" article. For easier reading, I have added paragraph breaks and some bracketed entries to clarify some of the information.

William Glascott died on Sat. April 10th at 8:00 pm at his residence on Market Street, Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin, aged 70 years of age. He was the third son of John Glascott, Esq., near New Ross, County of Wexford, Ireland, (at which place he was born in April of 1805) and Susan (Tree), his wife, a native of Newfoundland.

When about 13 years old, his father and mother died suddenly, confiding him and his brothers and two sisters (all minors) to the care of his uncle, the Rev. Wm. Glascott, of Pilltown, Chaplain, who, however, with systematic cruelty and selfishness, appropriated their estate and sent the orphans to America and there left those reared in the lap of luxury to battle with the stern hardships incident to a new country.

At the age of 18 years, William took a contract on the Erie Canal at Lockport [NY], employing 300 men. Afterwards he went to Canada and bought and cleared a farm in Bathurst Township, County of Lanark [Ontario].

In the early settlement of the county, he, with other pioneers, quite frequently carried 100 pounds of flour on his back through the unbroken forest, a distance of 40 miles, with no road but the foot track and the blazed trees to guide his path; while those who had flinched from him his rightful patrimony, reveled in wealth and luxurious ease. Here he married Catherine, daughter of John Campbell, Esq., and Margaret Stuart, his wife, of Portagal [likely Fortingall], Perthshire, Scotland. Having impaired his health somewhat by hard labor, he sold his farm and bought property in Perth and engaged actively in business.

For some eight years he had the Royal Mail contract, running from horse coach daily between Brockville and Perth on the St. Lawrence River. He then moved west to Milwaukee and shortly afterwards settled in Monroe, where he resided for about 20 years. Some years ago he was gun struck and suffered from the wound almost every warm season since. His health had been poor for the last few years by reason of the disease that was silently and steadily shortening his life. He was bedfast only about a week and died of dropsy of the heart.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church and afterwards of the Presbyterian. He died firm in the faith of a glorious resurrection and blessed immortality which after all are the only two riches. He was a man of great physical powers with a very active and powerful mind. Genial, kind, sociable and unselfish almost to a fault, he was one of nature's true nobility. He cared nothing for title of rank, but indulged in the hope that one day his cause would be righted.

The family title is "Glascott of Pilltown". Glascott of Pilltown in the County of Wexford and Kingdom of Ireland , beareth for arms on a field of azure, two eagle claws crossed a la quise Argent, barways armed. Crest, an eagle displayed with two heads party per pale Argent and azure armed sable. Motto, the Latin for 'Adorned with Valor'. He has left a widow, six sons and four daughters to mourn his loss. May he rest in peace.

William married Catherine Campbell 11 Aug 1825, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, British North America. Catherine was born Abt 1805, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom; died 1886, Bertie Twp, Welland County, Ontario, Canada . [Group Sheet]
