Notes:
Birth:
We don't know how old Richard Reddigan was when he died in 1872, however we do know that he was born in Ireland. His son, Richard Jr. stated in the 1900 US Census that his father was born in Ireland. On Richard Jr.'s death certificate from Bristol, Connecticut, it is also recorded that his father, was born in Ireland. Mary Readigan, a cousin, who married John Mullaly at Aquaforte in 1825, was recorded as being from Co. Kilkenny, so chances are that Richard Reddigan was also born in the same Irish county.
Deed:
Registry of Deeds - Southern District - Volume 1 Folio 47 - December 12, 1827 - Richard Reddigan of Caplin Bay sold a dwelling house, fishing flakes and stages at Brewin' Cove, Aquaforte to Andrew Morrisson, surgeon, Ferryland for £51.8.9.
Land:
Royal Gazette - September 20,1829: Richard Reddigan petitioned for a grant of land at Caplin Bay. While no surviving record has been found to verify that his petition was granted, later land holdings re-registered for Richard in the 1870s suggest his earlier land grant was approved.
Court Action:
Court Records - Southern Circuit minutes - 1830: Thomas Flannagan vs. Richard Reddigan. Action to recover £9. 10. 8 (nine pounds, ten shillings, eight pence). Defendant admits sum is due.
Occupation:
Index to Newfoundland Captains, 1820-1889
Captains Vessel Reg. No.
Redigan, Richard Castor 1835092
Redigan, Richard Castor 1837056
In the mid to late 1830s, it appears that Richard Reddigan spent some time as the captain of a small schooner called the Castor. Based on information extracted from the Maritime History Archives, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Richard Redigan was the captain of the Castor, a 41 ton two masted schooner built at Chapple (sic) Arm, Trinity Bay in 1835. The original owners were listed as Thomas Brooking, George Richard Robinson, and John Bingley Garland, merchants of Newfoundland and Great Britan. Two years later, the Castor was sold to Samuel Blackler, a trader/dealer of Tors Cove. Richard Redigan was still captain, but there are no indications as to how long he stayed on in that position. Records indicate that the Castor was lost at sea in 1869, but no further details have been found to date.
Land:
Crown Lands Records # 3216 - March 31 1871 Richard Redigan, Senior is granted parcel of land (south side of road to Stone Island} bounded on the west by land claimed by Thomas Condon and on the east by land claimed by James Walsh.
Will:
Will of Richard Reddigan, dictated on his deathbed and witnessed by Andrew Keough and Thomas Condon.
Richard left the waterfront and fishing room to his son Richard and "cousin" Martin Reddigan. He left the land, mentioned in the grant #3216 above, to Richard and John, (eldest sons of his son Michael) to be divided equally between them when they came of age. The land on the north side of the road, which had actually being granted under the name of Richard Redigan Jr., he left to his "cousin" Martin Reddigan. To his daughter Ellen Reddigan, he left his bed.

Headstone - Ferryland RC Cemetery - near Johnston family plot. Richard & Jane Reddigan, 95 yrs and 90 yrs.
The ages on this commemorative marker were estimated by a niece of Jane Reddigan. However, Richard's age on his death certificate was given as 82 years, 8 months, and 11 days, but, of course, this age was based on the date of birth given by his wife Jane. Dates/ages given in other documents indicate earlier and later birth dates for Richard.

No headstone was found for Richard Reddigan in St. Thomas' Cemetery in Bristol, CT.
Although Richard was buried in Bristol, Connecticut, a homemade headstone was eventually erected in Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Newfoundland for both him and Jane. It did not become part of Canada until 1949. Her father, as stated, was born in Ireland and her mother was actually born in Newfoundland, not England as shown in the census.

Evening Telegram (St. John's, N.L.), 1903-11-27.
------------------------------------------------
ATTACKED BY A LYNX. Last week James Power, of Caplin Bay, was attacked by a lynx while out shooting, and but for the timely arrival of John Reddigan and J. Ryan he would have been torn to pieces. It is a remarkable fact that lynx run away from people in Newfoundland except those living on the Peninsula of Avalon.
Evening Telegram (St. John's, N.L.), 1919-10-30.
------------------------------------------------
NEARLY DROWNED. During the gale, yesterday morning, Mr. Sebastian Laidwell (sic - Ledwell) was blown by the violence of the wind, into Old Woman's Pond near Caplin Bay and would have had a hard time getting out only for the timely assistance of Mr. John Reddigan who was passing.
Research Overview:
John was a fisherman/farmer all of his life, the traditional occupation for most men of Calvert of that era. He lived in the old house on the land that had been settled by his grandfather in the 1820s. In his grandfather's will of 1872, John is mentioned as one of the eldest sons of his father, Michael, and was slated as an eventual heir of a half share of the old Reddigan homestead along with his brother, Richard.
This Richard, according to family lore was lost at sea, and John's other brothers also died, except for his younger brother, (Big) Mike. Mike was only a few weeks old when his grandfather died, and was not willed any property. However, in the second decade of the 1900s, so the family story goes, John agreed to split the house and land that he had inherited into two equal parts and he gave half of it to his brother, Mike, to "keep peace in the family".
Thereafter the old duplex house was occupied for many years by both families; with John's half being occupied by his son, Tom, until his death in 1984. The old house remained standing, but in an ever declining state of disrepair, until it was eventually demolished in 2005.
Died:
There was no Newfoundland Vital Statistics death record found for John Reddigan, however the attached obituary was found in a Boston newspaper.

| 12. | Joseph "Jose" Reddigan (3.Michael3, 2.Richard2, 1.Ancestral1) was born Abt 1870, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 2 Apr 1906, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 4 Apr 1906, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
Died:
A story told by Tom Reddigan relates that his Uncle Jose died after a voyage to the icefields (i.e. seal hunting). Apparently he had mistakenly taken a clothes bag belonging to someone else and didn't discover this until he was at the icefields. The clothes that were in the bag didn't fit him properly and he caught a severe cold. His death certificate states he died from pulmonary tuberculosis, however it is possible that it may have been that pneumonia or the severe cold hastened his inevitable death from tuberculosis.

Notes:
Research Overview:
Mike Reddigan was the last of Michaeal and Catherine (Whelan) Reddigan's children to die. He was a big tall man and even at 91 years old, he was only slightly bent by age. It seems that in his younger days, Big Mike, as he was called to distinguish him from his cousin Mike Joe Reddigan, was well known for his pugilistic inclinations and there are a number of stories told at Calvert of his prowess.
In the early 1900s, Mike Shallow of Admiral's Cove, Fermeuse, who had moved with his family to Boston and trained as a boxer, came back to Newfoundland. He eventually became the British Heavyweight Champion. It was said that he spent some time around Calvert (his mother's birthplace) and soon learned to steer clear of Mike Reddigan. This lead someone to quip that Mike Shallow may have been the "official" British Heavyweight Champion but Mike Reddigan was the "unofficial" British Heavyweight Champion.
Another story is told of how a group of young men decided that they would - collectively - take Big Mike down a notch. So they lay in wait one dark night, by the roadside, and pounced on Mike and a companion when they came by. In the ensuing fight, Big Mike and his companion fought hard and, though outnumbered, they eventually put their attackers to flight. Mike's companion mused that since it was too dark to recognize any of their attackers, maybe they should report the incident to the constable at Ferryland and have him investigate. Big Mike's reply to this was "I'll know mine in the morning". The "mine", meaning the ones that he had hit, who undoubtedly would bear the marks of his knuckles for quite a while afterwards.
Michael married Catherine Frances "Kate" McBride 29 Nov 1916, Holy Trinity RC Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland. Catherine (daughter of John McBride and Elizabeth Bridget Ryan) was born 15 Nov 1886, Caplin Bay, Newfoundland; died 1975, Calvert, Newfoundland; was buried 1975, Holy Trinity RC Cemetery, Ferryland, Ferryland District, Newfoundland, Canada. Notes:
Immigration:
Immigration records show that Miss Alice Reddigan (20) and Miss C. Reddigan (18) were listed on the manifest of the SS Silva departing from St. John's on Nov. 14, 1903 for Halifax, NS and New York, NY. However on the manifest indicates that their final destination was Halifax, not New York.
Reddigan family folklore related by the late Tom Reddigan indicates that his Aunt Alice and cousin Catherine Frances went to the US at the same time. This information appears to match the 1903 immigration record information. However, in the 1910 US Census, Catherine's immigration year is recorded as 1907. In searching the immigration records for that year, there is also a record for a Kate Reddigan who arrived in New York, via Halifax, on May 15, 1907. However, there is insufficient information to determine whether this individual was Catherine Frances Reddigan of Caplin Bay or Catherine Reddigan of St. John's. At that point in time, some of the St. John's Reardigan family still used the Reddigan spelling of the surname.
Catherine married George Joseph Armstrong 24 Apr 1910, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. George (son of George Armstrong and Dorothy Gatherall) was born 20 Jul 1878, Bay Bulls, Newfoundland; died 27 Mar 1947, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States; was buried 31 Mar 1947, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1900.
WRAPPED IN FLAMES, SHE DASHED INTO THE STREET - Agnes Jollymour Fatally Burned in a Gasoline Explosion.
ALAMEDA, Feb. 26 - Wrapped in flames from head to foot Miss Agnes Jollymour dashed out of the store of P. W. Wobber, 1545 Park Street, this afternoon, creating great excitement on Alameda's main thoroughfare. The flames were quickly extinguished, but the young lady was so badly burned that she cannot recover.
The fire was caused by the explosion of a can of gasoline and Miss Jollymour, who remained conscious throughout her suffering, was able to make a statement as to the manner of the accident to the physicians who attended her. She said she went into the shed in the rear of the Wobber store, where the illuminating oils are kept, for the purpose of filling a can with gasoline. The shed was dimly lighted by a small coal oil lamp, but Miss Jollymour did not notice its proximity to the gasoline. She had just begun to pour the gasoline when it exploded. In an instant she was enveloped in flames and ran screaming into the street.
George Foster of Foster &Son, contractors, was working upon a building in course of erection adjoining the Wobber store. Miss Jollymour ran to him, putting her hands upon his shoulders. Foster told the girl to lie down in order that he and others who came to his assistance might have a better chance to stamp out the fire. She refused to obey and was finally thrown to the ground. The flames were not easily subdued, but finally Foster procured a bucket, filled it with water from a barrel used by plasterers, and threw it upon the suffering girl.
Miss M. M. Smith, whose father is engaged in the tea business next to the Wobber store, saw Miss Jollymour run into the street and held her in her arms while the flames were being quenched. Her own clothing was slightly scorched.
Miss Jollymour was removed to the home of her mother, 1130 Park Avenue, where all that could be done was performed by kind hands. The physicians in attendance think there is small hope for her recovery. Over one-half of her body is horribly burned, particularly about the abdomen. In her efforts to beat the flames away her hands were also burned.
"When Miss Jollymour came running out of the store," said Miss Smith," she was a mass of fire from the ground to her chest. I ran to her assistance and after she had been forced to the walk, held her in my arms. I screamed to the men not to use any water, but they found they could not get the flames out with their hands and so dashed it upon her." "There was nothing else to do but use the water," said George Foster. "We tried to stamp the fire out, but it seemed to be getting worse. I know that water is not considered a good thing to use, but I had rather use some of it than see the whole body scorched with burns."
Once before in her life Miss Jollymour had been a victim of fire. When she was 10 years old her clothing caught fire from a grate and she came near being burned to death.
THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 1900 - Miss Jollymour Succumbs.
ALAMEDA Feb. 28. Miss Agnes Jollymour, the young lady who was so horribly burned by an explosion of gasoline on Monday afternoon, died at 9 o'clock this evening, after suffering nearly two days from her burns.
