Generation: 1
| 1. | James Aspell was born Abt Oct 1815, Rider's Harbour, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland; died 6 Apr 1885, St. John's, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 8 Apr 1885, Mount Carmel Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland. Other Events:
- Baptism: 18 Oct 1815, King's Cove RC Parish, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland
- Research Overview: 1857, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland
- Voter: 1859, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland
- Residence: 1871, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland
Notes:
Baptism:
Surname spelled Asbell. Godparents were Wm. O'Donnell and Mary Dawley.
Research Overview:
About the mid 1850s, James Aspell settled at Tar Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland. Tar Cove is located on the north side of the bay, just inside the headland adjoining Brigus (South). In various surviving records, people who resided there were usually referred to as being in Cape Broyle however, at other times they were referred to as being in Brigus (South).
Voter:
The first record of the Aspell surname in Ferryland District was at Cape Broyle. James Aspell is listed at Cape Broyle in the 1859 Voter's List. Per the existing regulations of that era, an eligible voter had to be the male head of the household, at least 21 years old, and a resident for the past two years. Research indicates that James' brother, Patrick married Elizabeth Meany (of Ferryland) at St. John's in 1854 however, it is unknown if he moved there at that time. While Patrick's name appears at Ferryland in later records, his name does not appear in any of the Ferryland District Voter's Lists up to 1859.
Residence:
In both Lovell's 1871 Directory and McAlpine's 1870-71 Directory, James Aspell, fisherman, is recorded as living in Cape Broyle.
Died:
Address given as George Street, St. John's.
James married Teresa Sullivan Abt 1844. Teresa was born Abt 1819, Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland; died 17 Apr 1899, St. John's, Newfoundland; was buried 19 Apr 1899, Mount Carmel Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2
| 2. | Honora Aspell (1.James1) was born Abt Sep 1844, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland; died Yes, date unknown. Other Events:
- Baptism: 15 Sep 1844, Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland
Notes:
Baptism:
Honora's godparents were Patrick Sullivan & Mary Sullivan but no specific location/parish was identified in the record. It was found at the The Rooms Archives in a collection that is labeled Bonavista-Trinity Roman Catholic - Baptisms - Box 3. The records takes in a number of settlements within Bonavista and Trinity Bay. Research indicates that the baptism was in likely in Trinity.
Died:
No reference is found to Honora after her baptism but the subsequent naming of a daughter of her sibling, John Aspell, suggests that she may have died young.

| 3. | John Aspell (1.James1) was born Abt 1845, Harbour Grace, Newfoundland; died 17 Nov 1912, St. John's, Newfoundland; was buried Abt 19 Nov 1912, Mount Carmel Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland. Other Events:
- Research Overview: 1845, Harbour Grace, Newfoundland
- Property: 1870, Tar Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
In the second marriage record of his eldest daughter, Nora, in Nova Scotia, John's place of birth was given as Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. His approx. year of birth is based on his age (67) given in his Newfoundland Vital Statistic Death record.
Research Overview:
Research has led me to conclude that this John Aspell was the son of James Aspell and Teresa Sullivan. The presence of the name Theresa/Teresa in the baptisms of two of John's daughters strongly suggests that kinship. However, I cannot be 100% sure since I have been unable to find documented proof.

Births, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland Newspapers 1810-1890
On the 17 July 1886, St. John's newspapers carried a death notice for "Maggie Aspenell", daughter of John and Margaret Aspenell. Her age is given as 3 yrs. and 2 months. No location is given, which generally indicates that the event occurred at St. John's. This is the only instance of a surname spelled Aspenell that I could find in any Newfoundland records, so it seems likely that it was an incorrect spelling of the surname Aspell. The age and parent's names strongly support the deduction that this was Margaret Anne Aspell who was born in June of 1883.
