Abt 1755 - Aft 1800 (~ 45 years)
Generation: 1
| 1. | John Denine was born Abt Oct 1755, Buckfastleigh, Devon, England; died Aft 1800, Tar Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland. Other Events:
- Baptism: 5 Oct 1755, Buckfastleigh, Devon, England
- Research Overview: 1800, Tar Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland
Notes:
Birth:
John's birth date and birthplace are speculative. However, English records show that there were two John Lenines christened at Buckfastleigh,Devon, England, one in 1748 (son of Sampson and Margaret) and another in 1755 (son of John and Mary). I selected the younger John on the premise that his first two children were named after his parents, John Lenine and Mary Bastow.
Research Overview:
Lenine/Leanine/Le Nine/Denine/Danine, etc. etc.
In the 1800 Ferryland District List of Inhabitants, etc. the Lenine family were recorded as living at Cape Broyle. It appears they actually lived at Tar Cove which is located on the north shore of the bay, between the area known as Island Cove and the settlement of Brigus South. Their place of residence is recorded several different ways in later documents, i.e. Tar Cove, Island Cove, Admirals' Cove, and Cape Broyle, depending on the author of the document.
Their surname has been recorded under many different spellings over the years, eventually becoming Denine (D'nine), although usually pronounced Da'nine in the local area. It is very difficult to determine the exact origin of this family. Certainly, if the name was actually Dineen/Denine, it is would be undoubtedly Irish. However, Lenine is also an English surname and the forename Sampson/Samuel was not a typical Irish forename of that era. Research indicates that a surname, recorded under both Lenine and Denine, was prevalent in South Devon in that era, particularly in and around a market town called Buckfastleigh. One of the male forenames used extensively in these families was Samson/Sampson, along with John and William.
Edward MacLysaght, an expert on Irish surnames, did not specifically mention Lenine as an Irish surname, however there are several similar surnames such as (O')Linnane and (O')Linneen which are variants of Lannan. Early Irish history records also relates that there was a Saint Colman Mac Lenine, founder and patron of the See of Cloyne, (Colman Mac Lenine meaning Colman, son of Lenine). As for the surname spelled Denine, Mclysaght again makes no specific reference of that spelling, but he does list (O')Dinan and (O')Dinneen, of which Denine could be a variant.
I am inclined to believe that the Lenine family ancestor was English in origin, however, it is likely that John's wife, Fanny was Irish, or of Irish descent.(KR)

Notes:
Birth:
Family surname recorded in various records under several spellings i.e. Le Nine, Lenine, Denine, Dinine, Danine, Daneen, Dennie, etc. and sometimes it has been incorrectly transcribed as Devine.
Voter:
John's name is listed at Tar Cove in the Cape Broyle Voter's List as John Le Nine in 1852 & 1859.
Residence:
John's name is listed in Lovell's 1871 Directory as John Dennie, a fisherman.
Died:
An old headstone in the Old Cape Broyle Cemetery states that John "Lenine" died Jan 30 1894. No official death record was found for him in the Vital Statistic records. John's age, per his headstone, was 60 years. His calculated birth year (circa 1834) based on that age/death year combination doesn't make sense since he was having children by 1843. However, in a court document for 1903, his son, William states his father was "dead 28 years" at that time,so this would suggest that John had died in 1874, not 1894 as inscribed on his headstone.

- Census: 1920, Tekoa, Whitman, Washington, United States
Notes:
Birth:
This individual stated he was born in Newfoundland but his age is given as 40 supposedly born June 1859. He was single and working as a farm hand.He indicated that he had emigrated in 1888, which was the same year that Samuel and Mary Joe Denine and family emigrated to Idaho.
Immigration:
Although no immigration record has been found to date, it appears Garrett traveled to Idaho at the same time as his brother Samuel and family. He stated it was in 1888.
Census:
In this census, Garrett was recorded as being born in Jun 1859? in Newfoundland. He was living alone and working as a farm laborer, as were most of the others people who are listed, so this may not have been his permanent address. He indicated he had entered the US in 1888. Both of his parents were noted (incorrectly) as being born in Ireland, a common error which seems to have been committed by enumerators who probably recorded that answer because of the individual's accent.
Census:
In the 1920 census, I found an individual who was recorded as Garret Deniana. He was 70, had been born in English Canada, and had entered the United States in 1889. He was a roomer in the residence and said he was unemployed.
