- VITAL STATISTICS -Volume 26D: - MARRIAGES 1835 - 1892 - ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST - St Johns, Newfoundland - Part 2: Dec 8 1846 St. Johns James JOHNSTON bach, St Johns Eliza GOFF spin, St Johns: William Coulman, Elizabeth Johnston.
A St. John's newspaper, The Courier, provided a little more detail of this marriage: Dec 16 1846 - James Johnston of Fairyland (blacksmith) and Elizabeth Goffe of Goffe Bridge, Co. Wexford, Ireland were married by Rev. T.F.H. Bridge.
The correct name for Eliza's hometown appears to be Goff's Bridge, Co. Wexford, Ireland. It was the site of one of the many battles of the 1798 Irish Uprising. As can be seen in the excerpt below, at least some of the Goffs in that area had considerable land holdings. We don't know for certain Eliza's religious affiliation. It would appear from some stories written about the 1798 Irish Uprising that a number of Goff families living in that area were Quakers. Being pacifists probably gave them a certain amount of protection from both the royal troops and insurgents. However, trying to appear neutral was difficult since at various times they fed, sheltered and cared for soldiers and victims from both warring factions.
Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837 - Civil parish of Horetown
HORETOWN, a parish, in the barony of SHELMALIER, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 3½ miles (S. W.) from Taghmon, on the old road from New Ross to Wexford town ; containing 1149 inhabitants. On the 20th of June, 1798, Gen. Moore, at the head of 1500 of the royal troops was intercepted at Goff’s-bridge, in this parish, by a body of 5000, or 6000 insurgents, which he repulsed with considerable loss. The parish comprises 3977 statute acres and contains Horetown, the seat and extensive demesne of W. Goff, Esq. ; Tottenham Green, of the Rt. Hon. and Rt. Rev. Lord R. Ponsonby Tottenham, Bishop of Clogher, Rockview, of C. Heatley, Esq. ; and Rakeendun, of J Goff, Esq. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Based on the newspaper information, it would appear that Eliza Goff was born in Ireland. We don't know when Eliza came to Newfoundland, and if she came alone or was part of a family who settled here. However, I did find a reference in the newspapers that there was a William Goff living at St. John's whose brother, Richard Goff, died at Tottenham Green, Co. Wexford, Ireland in 1846. Tottenham Green, as indicated above, was in the parish of Horestown where some Goffs had several large property holdings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some time after her husband James died, Eliza moved to St. John's, where most of her children were then living. An entry in McAlpine's 1898 Directory shows that Eliza and her youngest son, Jacob, were living in the same household at 114 Circular Road.
McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory - St. John's City Proper Johnson Elizabeth wid James h Circular Road
McALPINE'S 1898 Directory - City of St. John's District - St. John's Pages 248 - 261 Johnson, Mrs. Eliza, widow, h 114 Circular Road Johnson, Jacob, joiner, h 114 Circular Road
According to St. Thomas' Church burials, Eliza Johnston of Circular Road died November 27, 1903 and was buried two days later. Her age is given as 78 years. This would indicate that she was buried at St. John's, likely in Forest Road Anglican Cemetery (Kevin Reddigan).
