  In the 1891 Canada Census, Thomas was recorded as living in Ste Marie Ward, Montreal Centre, Quebec, Canada. The family surname was spelled 'Mahaney', likely a phonetic rendering of the name which was then (and later) pronounced as "Mah ney". Thomas was recorded as being born in Newfoundland in 1862 (age 29). He was working as a brewer. His wife, Margaret, whose name was recorded as 'Marthers', was also born in Newfoundland in 1866 (age 25). They had one son, John, who was born in Quebec (age 2 years).

The birth date of their son, John, was recorded as 15 June 1889 and their daughter, Mary's birth date was recorded as 27 July 1892.
