John Munn

Abt 1780 - Yes, date unknown

• Name	John Munn
Born	Abt 1780	Scotland, United Kingdom   [1]
There are very few references to John Munn, his origin and his fate. However, the Surrogate Court records for Ferryland, in 1818/1819, show a number of cases involving Munn, Stuart & Co. The merchants involved appear to be John and James Munn and James? Stuart. No record was found for John Munn's marriage to Susanna Tree, who was born and raised at Ferryland. His two children, John Angus and Ann Eliza were baptised in St. Luke's Anglican Church there in 1825. John's occupation was given as Agent but no other details were given. Although these children were baptised in the Church of England, John appears to have had connections to the Presbyterian Munn families of Harbour Grace. The Presbyterian Church had its strongest presence in Newfoundland in the mid 1800s. Two churches were erected at St. John's and one was established in 1855 at Harbour Grace. Before that era, Presbyterian families used the clergy and premises of other Protestant denominations for baptisms, marriages and burials. Based on my research, John and Susanna's son, John Angus Munn, and at least one of their granddaughters,Isabella Ann, are buried in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery at Harbour Grace. While I could only identify the names of two of their children, the newspaper notification of Susanna's death in 1829 says that she left behind four children.
