Census |
1871 |
Pictou, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada [4] |
- James (40), a ship's captain, is recorded as being born in Nova Scotia. Mary (36) is also recorded (incorrectly) as being born in Nova Scotia. They had four children, Catherine (8), Agnes (6), Mary (4), and James (2). The family is recorded as being Roman Catholic. It states James was of English decent while Mary's ethnicity was Irish.

Census |
1881 |
Pictou, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada [1] |
- In this census, the ages of James and "Maryann Jollymoare" are quite different from the 1871 census. James, a sea captain, is recorded as being 57, while Mary Ann is recorded as being 44. Their children at that time were listed as Catherine, a teacher (18), Agnes (16), Mary Ann (13), James (11), Alice (9),and Bessie (7). They were all noted as being born in Nova Scotia, except for the daughter, Mary Ann, who was noted as being born "at sea". Again, Mary Ann (the mother) is recorded incorrectly as being born in Nova Scotia. While her ethnic origin is recorded as Irish, James ethnicity is recorded as being German.
