| Name |
James F. Kelly |
Born |
Abt 1834 |
Brighton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States [1, 2] |
- The various records that mention James' place of birth are very inconsistent. Some records state he was born in Ireland, Newfoundland, or in Brighton, Massachusetts. Per information from a descendant of James, when he died at Brighton in 1896, a local newspaper THE ITEM wrote, "The deceased was born in Brighton sixty-two years ago. When a child he went to St. John's, Newfoundland, from whence he returned to this district thirty-three years ago."
Research indicates that James' parents married at St. John's in June 1826 and several of their children were born there in the late 1820s and early 1830s. However, no baptism record has been found at St. John's, Newfoundland (or anywhere else) for James F. Kelly.
It appears that the Kelly family immigrated from Newfoundland to the USA about 1833/1834. This leads me to believe that references stating that James was born in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1834, are likely valid. However, James and his family moved back to St.John's, Newfoundland about 1840, where a couple more of his siblings were born.

Abt 1863 |
Unknown |
- The date of James' immigration to the US has been difficult to determine. We know that he married Anastasia Keefe in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Dec. 1862 and their first child was born in the US in Feb. 1864. Based on the newspaper reference at the time of his death, James had immigrated to Brighton about 1863. However, being American-born, James may have travelled to the US prior to his marriage. If he was involved in maritime activities based out of Boston, he may have met Anastasia in Nova Scotia, and took her to Brighton, Massachusetts soon after they married.
It also appears that most of James' siblings immigrated to the US in the 1860s, but it is not clear if this was an "en masse" family migration, or if they arrived separately over that decade. Baptism records reflect the early presence of John and Thomas Kelly, along with Ann, Theresa, Mary Kelly. This group was later joined by Monica (Kelly) Forrestall, a sister who had married at St. John's in 1860. She appears to have immigrated to the US to join her son Thomas J. Forrestall in the late 1800s.

Abt 1833 |
Unknown [7] |
- It appears that sometime about 1833, Thomas, Mary, and family immigrated to the United States and lived in Brighton, Massachusetts. However, they had returned to Newfoundland again before 1840. These dates are approximate since no immigration records have been located to verify these observations. [7]

- US Census information for James and Anastasia (Keefe) Kelly based on ancestry.com transcriptions. This is an extract of information taken from the various US Censuses. Be aware that census information is often fraught with incorrect information due to a lack of knowledge of specific family details, a misunderstanding of questions asked and/or answers given. Enumerators were left to "create" their own spellings, and often had to calculate dates based on age at last birthday, etc. For these reasons, the recorded information often differs significantly from dates recorded in church registers or civil records. Remember too that these records have been transcribed, sometimes introducing additional errors due to difficulty in deciphering some of the handwriting, which varies greatly in quality and style.

This shows James and Anastasia (Anna) were living on Western Avenue in Boston. They had eight living children at this time. James and Anna indicated that all of their parents were born in Ireland. It states that James was born in Massachusetts, and it shows Anna was born in Canada (technically incorrect since Newfoundland did not become part of Canada until 1949).
