| Cause: mine accident |
- It appears that John left Caplin Bay in the 1880s and went to work in the copper mines at Little Bay, on the western shores of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Little Bay, once called Indian Bight, is a community 16 kms north of Springdale, Newfoundland. When the copper reserves started to deplete in the early 1890s, many of the miners who had settled there, also worked at their previous livelihood - fishing. This appears to have been John's situation. However, John was killed in a mining accident in 1894. His occupation at the time of his death was listed as a smelter. His widow, Mary, is listed as still living in Indian Bight (Little Bay) in 1898.

Abt 1857 |
- There may have been other children in this marriage, but only four have been identified so far. It is curious that the baptisms for two of their four children, (Mary and John), were recorded in Holy Apostles RC Parish, but no records were found for the other two,(Catherine and Elizabeth), in the parish baptism records in the Ferryland area. However in the 1921 Newfoundland Census, both Catherine and Elizabeth indicated that they were born at Caplin Bay in the 1870s.
