| Notes |
- This surname is recorded with several different spellings including Leahy, Leahey, Lahy, and Lahey. I have used the spelling Lahey for the name listings, although in many cases the surname was recorded differently (Kevin Reddigan).
Cape Broyle community historian, Jim Joe O'Brien, wrote that William and Mary Anne Lahey came to Cape Broyle, from Ireland, in 1812 with their two children, Michael and Margaret. According to Mr. O'Brien, William supposedly came over with the "Keough gang". This term in all likelihood refers to the merchant firm of Kough & Co. Ferryland Court records show that that George and Thomas Kough & Co. established, and operated a business at Cape Broyle for about three decades - from 1788 to at least 1816.The Koughs conducted business out of the inland port of New Ross, Co. Wexford, located on the River Barrow.
William Lahey settled at Riverhead, Cape Broyle. Mr. O'Brien stated that William was a shoemaker and that his relatives owned a business or farm back in Ireland. Later, when these relatives died, William inherited some money from the estate. It appears, however, that most of the inheritance was used up in trying to procure it, so that William ended up with only 60 pounds, when all expenses were paid.
Voter's List - Cape Broyle 1840 - 1852 William Lahey - Riverhead
William's Lahey name (nor any Lahey) was not on the voter's list of 1855, so it appears that William may have died between 1852 and 1855.
