  Before he entered the US, John had to complete a pre-examination in Canada to determine if he could emigrate. This pre-examination was carried at Saint John, New Brunswick on 20 Aug 1923, two days after he arrived in that port from Newfoundland on the SS. Kyle. He stated he hadn't been in the US before and his intended destination was the home of his cousin Emma (Power) Sullivan who lived at 49A Saratoga St., East Boston, Massachusetts. (John and Emma were second cousins through their grandparents Joseph Swain and Mary (Swain) Walsh respectively). According to the manifests, John Canning was eventually allowed to enter the US in March 1924. It notes that his father's name was Alfred Canning from Calvert.

  According to the City Directories for Bristol, CT, John lived with the Jackman family in 1925 and 1926. In 1927, he is shown as living next door at # 8 Franklin Street. He lived there until his death, which according to the Bristol CT directories, occurred on June 11, 1943 at the age of 41.

  In the 1930 US Census, John Canning, from Newfoundland, was living at #8 Franklin Street in Bristol, Connecticut. He had been married for two years and his wife's name was Gertrude C. She was born in Connecticut, but her parents were from Newfoundland. There are no children shown in the census and it appears that both of them were working. They were next door neighbours of Arthur Jackman (of Renews?) and his wife Ellen (Clancy of Calvert?) who lived at #10 Franklin Street.

  In the 1945 Bristol City Directory, the widow Gertrude C. Canning is recorded as living at #10 Franklin St. It also gives the death date of her husband, John J., as 11 Jun 1943.
