John Denine |

Abt Oct 1755 |
Buckfastleigh, Devon, England [1] |
- John's birth date and birthplace are speculative. However, English records show that there were two John Lenines christened at Buckfastleigh,Devon, England, one in 1748 (son of Sampson and Margaret) and another in 1755 (son of John and Mary). I selected the younger John on the premise that his first two children were named after his parents, John Lenine and Mary Bastow.

Tar Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland [2] |
- Lenine/Leanine/Le Nine/Denine/Danine, etc. etc.
In the 1800 Ferryland District List of Inhabitants, etc. the Lenine family were recorded as living at Cape Broyle. It appears they actually lived at Tar Cove which is located on the north shore of the bay, between the area known as Island Cove and the settlement of Brigus South. Their place of residence is recorded several different ways in later documents, i.e. Tar Cove, Island Cove, Admirals' Cove, and Cape Broyle, depending on the author of the document.
Their surname has been recorded under many different spellings over the years, eventually becoming Denine (D'nine), although usually pronounced Da'nine in the local area. It is very difficult to determine the exact origin of this family. Certainly, if the name was actually Dineen/Denine, it is would be undoubtedly Irish. However, Lenine is also an English surname and the forename Sampson/Samuel was not a typical Irish forename of that era. Research indicates that a surname, recorded under both Lenine and Denine, was prevalent in South Devon in that era, particularly in and around a market town called Buckfastleigh. One of the male forenames used extensively in these families was Samson/Sampson, along with John and William.
Edward MacLysaght, an expert on Irish surnames, did not specifically mention Lenine as an Irish surname, however there are several similar surnames such as (O')Linnane and (O')Linneen which are variants of Lannan. Early Irish history records also relates that there was a Saint Colman Mac Lenine, founder and patron of the See of Cloyne, (Colman Mac Lenine meaning Colman, son of Lenine). As for the surname spelled Denine, Mclysaght again makes no specific reference of that spelling, but he does list (O')Dinan and (O')Dinneen, of which Denine could be a variant.
I am inclined to believe that the Lenine family ancestor was English in origin, however, it is likely that John's wife, Fanny was Irish, or of Irish descent.(KR)
