Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle, Newfoundland |
Thomas and Eleanor were the ancestors of the Careys of Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle. This family has predominately used the spelling CAREY instead of CAREW, although in records and in day to day references, both spellings and pronunciation of these surnames have been used interchangeably. Thomas moved from Witless Bay in the 1850s. However, his name does not appear in the Voters Lists at Cape Broyle up to 1859 which could indicate that he may have been there initially on a seasonal basis, i.e. during the fishing season.
When Thomas moved to Admiral's Cove, Cape Broyle, it appears that several members of his family moved there with him. Marriages of his daughters brought the Harveys and Bruffs to this area as well. It is not known if some of the family stayed at Witless Bay, since the names become lost in the profusion of many other Carey/Carew names there.
It has not been determined if this Thomas Carew was related to another Thomas Carew who settled at Shore's Cove, Cape Broyle in the early 1840s. He married Anna Coryear, daughter of an English merchant named Henry Coryear, who was born in Dartmouth, Devon, England. This family has generally used the CAREW surname, however like the CAREY's, both surnames have been also used by this family. According to his obit in a St. John's newspaper, Thomas Carew of Shore's Cove was born at Witless Bay about 1807.
Lovell's 1871 Provincial Business Directory - CAPE BROYLE Carew Thomas, fisherman Carew Thomas, fisherman There were two heads of families given as Thomas Carew, so it is my deduction that one of them was the Thomas who lived at Admiral's Cove. and the other was the Thomas who lived at Shore's Cove. |
