Constabulary Department in 1836 (first name not given) Geary - Catholic (Salary - £45 - 0 - 0) Note: Geary was one of the prosecutors of the priests representatives in the Autumn of 1836 and immediately after that trial was rewarded with a constable-ship, a Catholic constable having been displaced for not having been more active on the state prosecutions at that term to make room for him.
Journal of the House of Assembly - Salaries - Oct 14, 1839 Ferryland. Francis Geary, Gaoler, Ferryland. £6 - 5 - 0.
Francis Geary's name first appears in the Ferryland voters list of 1844 with him living at the Courthouse. In the Nfld Almanac, he is listed as the "gaolor" at Ferryland in 1844. His name is listed in all subsequent voter lists at Ferryland, up to and including 1859, but his residence is given at different locations in Ferryland. Although he doesn't appear as the head of a household at Ferryland in Lovell's 1871 Directory, he is shown in a list of Government Positions as being the keeper of the courthouse and "goal" at Ferryland We know that Francis was married before because his second marriage record states that he was a widower. We are certain of one child (Patrick George Geary) from this previous marriage, however, it appears that Mary and Agnes Geary were also from that marriage.

Anne Rossiter, b. Caplin Bay, Newfoundland , d. Abt 1859, Ferryland, Newfoundland |
Married |
13 Nov 1849 |
St. Luke's CE Parish, Ferryland, Newfoundland [1, 2] |
- Although Anne's marriage was recorded in the Ferryland Church of England records, there were no baptisms for any children recorded in the Church of England baptismal register. The one child, for which there is a surviving baptismal record, was baptized Roman Catholic.
This marriage was also noted very briefly by Robert Carter in his Journal stating "Geary married by Mr. Hamilton" (the CE pastor for Ferryland).
It is likely the couple were also married within the Roman Catholic Church. This manoeuvre kept Francis in good standing within his religious faith (Roman Catholicism) and also satisfied the bias towards members of that faith who were holding Crown appointments.
